Migrant Boat Capsizes Near Canary Islands

At least nine migrants lost their lives, and 48 remain missing after a boat carrying 84 people capsized near the Canary Islands. Spain’s maritime rescue service received a distress call from one of the passengers overnight and immediately launched a rescue operation.

Rescue Efforts Save 27 Survivors

Despite the challenging conditions, including strong winds and darkness, the rescue team managed to save 27 migrants. Sadly, they also recovered nine bodies from the water. The boat capsized around midnight, just four miles off the coast of El Hierro, one of the Canary Islands.

Chaos Led to Capsizing

According to reports, the boat capsized when migrants panicked and rushed to one side, causing it to tip over. The Spanish rescue service responded quickly, but the search efforts were hindered by rough seas and poor visibility during the night.

Search Continues for Missing Migrants

As daylight broke, rescue boats and helicopters continued searching for the 48 missing individuals. High winds of 20 knots further complicated the mission, but rescuers remain committed to finding as many survivors as possible.

A Grim Reminder of Dangerous Journeys

This tragic incident highlights the perilous journeys migrants often undertake to seek safety and better lives. The Canary Islands, a frequent destination for migrant boats, have seen numerous fatalities in recent years as desperate people continue to risk their lives crossing treacherous waters.
