A bus carrying worshipers en route to an Easter festival met with a devastating accident on Thursday in South Africa, plunging off a bridge on a mountain pass and igniting into flames. The incident resulted in the tragic loss of at least 45 lives.

Sole Survivor and Serious Injuries

Amidst the wreckage, an 8-year-old girl emerged as the sole survivor, though she sustained serious injuries. Authorities in the northern province of Limpopo confirm that she is currently undergoing medical treatment.

Details of the Accident

According to the Limpopo provincial government, the bus careened off the Mmamatlakala bridge, hurtling 50 meters into a ravine before being engulfed in flames. Rescue operations are underway, but the intensity of the fire has made it difficult to retrieve bodies, with many remaining trapped inside the vehicle.

Pilgrimage Route Tragedy

The bus was believed to be traveling from Botswana to Moria, a town known for hosting a significant Easter pilgrimage. This unfortunate incident underscores the dangers associated with increased road traffic during holiday periods.

Calls for Caution

The South African government routinely issues warnings urging motorists to exercise caution during the Easter holidays, a time marked by heightened travel activity. Just prior to the accident, authorities had emphasized the importance of vigilance due to anticipated high volumes of road travelers heading to Moria.
