Campaign Research Reveals George Santos’ Deceptive Claims
A recently unveiled research report conducted by George Santos’ own campaign has raised serious concerns about the New York Republican congressman. The report, which was commissioned by his campaign in 2021, questioned several aspects of Santos’ personal life, education, and financial history, painting a troubling picture of the politician.
Dubious Educational Claims
One of the major concerns raised in the vulnerability report was Santos’ education. He had claimed to hold an MBA from New York University and a bachelor’s degree from Baruch College. However, the research found no evidence to support these claims, casting doubt on his educational background.
Conflicting Personal Life
Santos identified publicly as gay, but the report revealed that he had been married to a woman of uncertain immigration status from 2012 to 2019. Subsequently, he dated and lived with an undocumented immigrant who feared deportation under the Trump administration.
Involvement with Alleged Fraudulent Companies
The report also highlighted Santos’ association with companies accused of fraudulent activities and customer scams, including one involved in a Ponzi scheme. This raised concerns about his professional history and ethics.
Financial Troubles and Legal Issues
Santos faced multiple civil judgments for debts owed to creditors, and his financial disclosures did not align with his public claims of financial success and wealth management expertise. Additionally, he had a history of housing eviction lawsuits and unpaid traffic violations.
Residency and Voting Questions
Despite running for office in New York, Santos had only recently registered a new company in Florida and had not registered to vote in New York until after launching his campaign. This raised questions about his residency and commitment to representing his constituents.
The research findings, initially circulated among top Republican campaign strategists in the US House of Representatives, ultimately led to the Congressional Leadership Fund withholding its support for Santos. However, it’s worth noting that at least one House leadership member campaigned with Santos after the report was distributed.
While Democratic operatives conducted their research on Santos during the campaign, they missed many of the details contained in the internal report, as well as subsequent news reports. Santos currently faces federal charges, including wire fraud, money laundering, making false statements to Congress, and misappropriation of public funds. He has entered a not guilty plea and is reportedly considering a plea agreement with prosecutors.
