Recently unsealed court documents have disclosed that the six-year-old student responsible for shooting his teacher in the United States earlier this year reportedly bragged about the incident, claiming “I shot [her] dead.” The child, who shot his teacher Abigail “Abby” Zwerner in January at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, has not been charged in relation to the shooting.
While being restrained after the shooting, the boy allegedly admitted, “I did it,” and went on to state that he obtained his mother’s gun the previous night. The boy’s mother, Deja Taylor, is facing charges of felony child neglect and misdemeanour recklessly leaving a loaded firearm in a manner that endangers a child. Taylor has also been charged with unlawful use of a controlled substance while possessing a firearm and making false statements during the purchase of a firearm.
During the shooting incident, Ms. Zwerner, the primary teacher, recounted seeing the child pull a firearm out of his jacket pocket and aim it at her. She reportedly asked him, “What are you doing with that?” before he shot her in the hand and chest. The injured teacher required multiple surgeries.
The newly released documents also reference a prior incident involving the same student during his time in kindergarten. A retired teacher reported that the student had choked her to the point of impeding her breathing. The court documents further reveal that after the shooting, Amy Korvac, a reading specialist at the school, restrained the student until the police arrived. It was during this time that the child allegedly confessed to the shooting.
In her lawsuit filed in April, Ms. Zwerner accuses school officials of gross negligence, asserting that they disregarded warning signs despite knowing that the child had a history of violent behavior. The lawsuit seeks $40 million in damages.
The shooting incident has raised concerns about firearm accessibility and school safety measures, highlighting the need for preventative measures and enhanced security protocols in educational institutions.
