Violent clashes between supporters and opponents of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan erupted in polling stations located in the southern French city of Marseille on Monday. The incident happened as Turkish citizens living abroad cast their votes in the crucial elections back home. The brawl resulted in the injury of four police officers who were trying to separate the supporters of the incumbent leader from those who opposed him.
The first fight began around 2:30 p.m. local time, and the violence caused four people to be hospitalized. Later on, the officers used tear gas to control the situation, but the clashes continued throughout the day. Despite the police’s presence, two individuals were arrested for their involvement in the violent activity.
The elections in Turkey are set to take place on May 14, but the country’s large expat community is allowed to vote several weeks before that. The vote is one of the most significant in recent years, and it will determine Turkey’s political future.
